== 2. Chapter text ==

A person has an hour of video and ten minutes to decide whether it contains an answer she needs. (The person, her colleagues and the talk are constructed for this book, as are the examples that follow in this part.) It is a conference talk about a consensus protocol, recorded last spring. She cannot watch the whole thing. She could scrub through random moments or search an automatically generated transcript, perhaps fourteen thousand words of imperfectly recognised speech. The familiar interface invites one coarse decision: watch or skip. Her actual question is narrower: does this talk establish anything about the failure conditions our service faces, and where can I check the speaker&rsquo;s answer? A title, a transcript hit and a convincing clip may each help her find it; none alone guarantees that the answer is complete.
Part II is about selection, and selection needs candidates at a usable granularity. A paper already offers visible sections and paragraphs, though its claims and their qualifications may cross those boundaries. An hour-long recording has playback time and perhaps captions or chapter markers, but its logical units are less obvious. A system that treats the recording as a single candidate can recommend the whole hour or reject it; it cannot reliably identify the two minutes that explain a decision without first locating and relating smaller pieces. The first task is not ranking the fragments. It is proposing what the fragments actually are.

The system may need smaller units, or a bundle of several distant moments; occasionally the source as a whole remains the right unit. Whether any resulting unit is important to the current task is a later decision. Decomposition should not smuggle a relevance verdict into the source record.
Three moments in one hour Here are three moments stipulated by the invented talk. Their timestamps make the example checkable as a design exercise; they are not observations from an actual recording.
At minute 4 the speaker quietly defines the fault model: in this talk, a &lsquo;fault&rsquo; means a node crash, not arbitrary incorrect behaviour. No slide flags the definition. At minute 42 she demonstrates a particular execution in which the protocol commits in two round trips while some nodes crash. At minute 53 someone asks whether the result still holds when message delays grow without bound. The speaker says that the demonstrated latency claim assumes bounded communication delays. These are separate limits: which failures the protocol considers, and which timing conditions the fast-commit result assumes. Neither moment alone tells the reader everything about the protocol&rsquo;s guarantees.
Constructed talk. The three moments are linked by meaning; spacing below is schematic, not a time scale. Open full-size diagram. Each moment is brief, and the demonstration is the one likely to attract attention. But an account of what the speaker showed needs all three: the failure model, the observed execution and the timing qualification. Otherwise &rsquo;two round trips&rsquo; can be misread as an unconditional guarantee. Nor does a successful demonstration prove that the protocol is safe in every execution satisfying those assumptions. In distributed systems, safety, termination and latency are different claims; a timing assumption that limits completion time does not, by itself, settle safety under unbounded delay. The decomposed unit must preserve the distinction between an observed run, the speaker&rsquo;s claimed scope and any independently established result. That is why a polished summary keeping only minute 42 can be substantively misleading without inventing a single new number.
This makes the recording too coarse as the only unit. Fixed thirty-second windows have the opposite problem: the definition, demonstration and qualification occur forty-nine minutes apart at their extremes, so no single window carries the relationship. Windows can still be excellent indexing and playback aids. What fails is equating a window with a self-sufficient claim. A usable representation must be able to link distant evidence while preserving the route back to each moment.
The live application introduced in the previous chapter, Too Much YouTube, still screens titles and descriptions; in the documented state of that application it does not process transcripts. A video with an important condition spoken only at minute 53 can therefore be selected or withheld for reasons that never inspected that condition. Transcript-aware processing is a proposed next slice, not an established capability of the live feed. The chapter&rsquo;s separate runnable example uses an invented, timestamped transcript to demonstrate the shape of source-grounded units. It has not established that speech recognition is accurate, that the units can be discovered automatically, or that the live subscription screen can already use them.
Four things called a unit The word &lsquo;unit&rsquo; can refer to at least four objects. Conflating them is how a convenient slice of media becomes a misleading claim about its contents.

A presentation unit is what playback shows or navigates to: a chapter marker, slide interval or fixed window, which may or may not follow the talk&rsquo;s logic. == 8. How to investigate ==

1. Read the supplied chapter. State its thesis, its main claims, the assumptions it depends on, the examples and code it uses, and the reader level it assumes. Do this before searching, so your search queries come from the chapter rather than from what you happen to know is fashionable.
2. Identify what may be dated or unsupported: claims that later work has overtaken, statements presented without a source, mechanisms whose current best implementation has changed, and missing developments. Equally, identify what remains sound. A chapter that needs no change is a legitimate and useful finding.
3. Form targeted search queries from the chapter's specific claims, terminology and mechanisms. Do not add papers merely because they are recent or popular.
4. Investigate original papers, official documentation, reference implementations and source code. Follow each thread to the primary source rather than stopping at a summary.
5. Use Hacker News and similar discussion sites as discovery seeds and as commentary. Follow the links to their original sources. Distinguish what a commenter asserts from what someone has demonstrated.
6. Consider Hugging Face Papers as one discovery channel where the chapter's subject overlaps its coverage. Check which tools and APIs are actually available to you now rather than inventing endpoints, and do not depend on it for books outside its subject area.
7. Verify bibliographic metadata: authors, title, venue, publication and last-update dates, identifiers (DOI, arXiv id, version) and the exact URL. 9. Label your evidence classes separately and never blur them: established background; results reported by a source; results you reproduced locally; your own hypotheses; and experiments you are proposing.
10. Inspect any associated code and run focused checks only if you actually have execution available and it is appropriate. Record the commands, versions, artifacts, failures and anything you skipped. Never present an experiment you did not run as a result.
11. Recommend the proportionate change: a correction, a clarification, a citation, a new example, a new experiment, a new section, or no change at all. Do not propose a wholesale rewrite of a chapter that is fundamentally right.
12. Produce concrete proposed text or a patch, with citations and a reason for each change. Note any bibliography, Concepts sidecar, notebook or neighbouring-chapter edits needed for consistency, and report them as dependencies rather than silently applying them across the book.
13. If the evidence does not justify an upgrade, say so plainly and report that instead of manufacturing changes.
